MotoGP championship chasers Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa both sense that Casey Stoner is unbeatable at Phillip Island on Sunday.
But both Spaniards think they can beat each other.
Lorenzo led the superlatives for Stoner’s remarkable Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix achievements so far this weekend while carrying an ankle injury.
“Casey’s unbeatable this weekend if no mistakes happen,” Lorenzo said after Stoner grabbed pole position and continued to set lap times no other rider has been able to get near – even after a qualifying crash.
“I’m really surprised with his pace. He feel nothing about his injury.”
Yamaha’s Lorenzo, who leads Pedrosa by just 23 points going into Sunday’s penultimate race of the MotoGP season, will start second on the grid.
Honda rider Pedrosa will start alongside Stoner and Lorenzo on the front row – third fastest in qualifying.
Stoner is out of championship contention.
Pedrosa goes into the race as MotoGP’s form rider, winning five of the last six races to give himself a chance of snaring his maiden championship.
“Front row is important, but Casey looks very strong,” Pedrosa said.
“But my pace is similar to Jorge. So it’s important to have a good race tomorrow. I will try to keep focus and ride as well as I can.”
Lorenzo, the 2010 MotoGP champion, could wrap up the championship if he finishes second, or picks up three points more than Pedrosa in Sunday’s race.
“Second place today is very important for the race tomorrow,” Lorenzo said.
“It is important to make a good start. We are close to our goal, but we must keep going tomorrow.”
