All black and white for Barty in Paris

Things might look a little different but Ashleigh Barty insists nothing’s changed as she eyes a maiden French Open third round appearance.

The world No.8 will take the court against Australian Open semi-finalist Danielle Collins in a striking black and white number she admitted had spooked her at first.

Accustomed to more conservative on-court attire, the 23-year-old Australian admitted it was something to get used to.

“I picked it up and I was like, oh, yeah … this is ‘wow’,” she said.

“But obviously when I put it on, it’s not as out there as I thought it would be.

“I don’t mind it, I think it pops.”

Attire aside, everything else remains the same for the equal parts humble and skilful Australian, whose last French Open campaign was ended by Serena Williams in the second round.

With an Australian Open quarter-final under her belt earlier this year, Barty is learning to navigate her way through a major and says consistency has become her greatest strength.

“Nothing’s changed if I’m being brutally honest,” she said of her approach as a newly-minted top-10 talent.

“Whether I’m a wildcard or seeded – that’s the best thing about the last 18 months, two years.”

Barty beat Collins 6-1 1-6 6-1 in Madrid earlier this month, describing it as “one of the most bizarre” matches she has played.

But, importantly, she prevailed and says she took some valuable lessons from it too.

Barty’s quarter of the draw opened up slightly on Wednesday with the retirement of 22nd seed Bianca Andreescu (shoulder).

That allowed Sofia Kenin through to the third round, where a likely meeting with countrywomen Williams awaits.

Barty would play the winner of Su-Wei Hsieh and Andrea Petkovic if she can repeat the dose against Collins, before a potential fourth-round reunion with Williams.
