Warriors in reported Nikorima NRL raid

Brisbane halfback Kodi Nikorima could be a Warriors player by the weekend, with reports linking the Broncos No.7 with an imminent NRL move.

The Courier Mail reported the Warriors are seeking the services of the New Zealand Test half after a groin injury to veteran Blake Green exposed their playmaking depth.

The Broncos face Wayne Bennett’s South Sydney on Thursday but if paperwork is finalised by Tuesday the 25-year-old could line up for the Warriors against Newcastle on Sunday instead.

Ben Hunt’s move to St George Illawarra last season saw Nikorima move fulltime into the halves, but he and five-eighth Anthony Milford have struggled for consistency in a 2-5 start to this season.

Contracted at Red Hill until the end of 2020, Nikorima could be released mid-season in a move that could pave the way for either Tom Dearden or Sean O’Sullivan to move into the Brisbane No.7.

Dearden, 18, was named in Anthony Seibold’s 21-man squad for the first time last week and, despite not being retained on the bench to play Cronulla, received high praise from the coach.

The Warriors (2-5) were gritty in a 13-12 loss to Melbourne last weekend but have struggled since Green’s injury, particularly after the surprise release of Shaun Johnson from the final year of his contract to sign with Cronulla.

Adam Keighran burst onto the scene in the Warriors’ opening round defeat of Canterbury only to be dropped two weeks later and replaced by 20-year-old Chanel Harris-Tavita.

Green’s injury further complicated things though, with Harris-Tavita partnering with back-rower Tohu Harris in the halves for the Anzac Day loss to Melbourne.
