Halep eliminates Barty from Canadian Open

Australia’s Ashleigh Barty has bowed out of the Canadian Open after suffering a straight-sets defeat to world No.1 Simona Halep.

The top-seeded Romanian cruised to her third career final in Canada with a 6-4 6-2 victory over the error-prone Australian in just one hour and 10 minutes in Toronto on Saturday.

Barty, who faced the French Open champion the first time in her career, won just one of seven break point chances she created and racked up 37 unforced errors.

Halep quickly won the first five games of the first set, with the Australian No.1 breaking her just once, before the top seed closed it out.

The 2016 Canadian Open champion in Montreal then won the first three games of the second set.

Halep then saved four break points from 0-40 in the fourth game and another two in the sixth game.

Barty recovered from 0-40 in the final game only to double fault on the Halep’s fourth match point and hand her victory.

The defeat must have been tough for Barty, who only lost a single set over the previous four rounds.

The world No.16 eclipsed her previous best at the Canadian tournament, a place in the last 16 in 2017.

Halep will face either US Open champion Sloane Stephens or Australian Open quarter-finalist Elina Svitolina in Sunday’s final.
