We won’t pay more for Origin: Newman

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman says the state’s taxpayers fork out enough to support rugby league, and aren’t keen to pay more to secure future State of Origin games.

The Australian Rugby League Commission is reportedly considering selling the third Origin game to Melbourne or another place in two years out of a four-year cycle.

News Limited reports NSW has offered more money to secure future matches, while Queensland is threatening to review its funding if the games are removed from the state.

Mr Newman didn’t confirm the report on Thursday, but told reporters in Brisbane that rugby league heads should respect the game’s NSW and Queensland fanbase.

“If you don’t respect the fans, if you don’t respect the loyal public … then you devalue your whole organisation and your sport,” he said.

The frugal Mr Newman was reluctant to enter a bidding war to lock down future Origin matches.

He says Queenslanders already pay $8 million to support rugby league while other sports miss out.

“There are many women sporting groups that would like to see that level of funding, they don’t get it,” he said.
