Roos bemused by Walker’s AFL suspension

AFL commentator Paul Roos is bemused that Adelaide captain Taylor Walker will only miss one game for his high bump on Zach Tuohy.

Walker accepted his suspension and will miss Saturday night’s danger game against resurgent Brisbane at the Gabba.

Walker’s bump laid out Tuohy on Thursday night at Adelaide Oval, but the tough Geelong defender was able to return to the field and play out the game after passing concussion tests.

Despite the lack of serious injury, Roos is staggered that Walker was not hit with a heavier punishment.

“This is the most mind-boggling decision (match reviewer) Michael Christian has made all year,” Roos said on Fox Footy.

The tribunal will hear two cases on Tuesday night, with Walker’s teammate Bryce Gibbs contesting his fine for rough conduct.

Gibbs was fined $3000, but could have accepted $2000 with an early plea.

Gibbs was charged for a block off the ball that felled Cats captain Joel Selwood.

“I don’t think there was much in that,” Geelong coach Chris Scott said post-match.

Fremantle second-year player Ryan Nyhuis was referred directly to the tribunal after being charged with a dangerous tackle on Port Adelaide star Robbie Gray.

The Power midfielder was left concussed after his head hit the Optus Stadium turf in the tackle and Nyhuis appears certain to be suspended.

“The fact that in this particular case, there looked to be more than one action and the fact that he drove Gray into the ground in a vulnerable position with excessive force … it’s pretty conclusive that it did sit quite comfortably within the dangerous tackle guidelines,” Christian said after the charge was laid.
