Dog of a season motivates Blues’ Klemmer

He’s had a dog of a season at Canterbury.

But NSW prop David Klemmer is intent on putting all his NRL frustrations behind him and find a reason to celebrate his football by helping the Blues to a State of Origin whitewash.

Klemmer admits being left frustrated by a horrendous two seasons at Belmore that has left the once-proud club on its knees due to issues both on and off the field.

From the departure of a coach, CEO and numerous big-name players – including good mate Aaron Woods – Klemmer has been left deflated by it all.

“I’m just like a supporter, but I’m playing for the club,” Klemmer told AAP.

However the Kangaroos star insists the adversity at club level has forced him to find a maturity that has developed him into the leader of the Blues pack.

“It’s hard to walk in there; I’ve learnt a lot from the last two years,” Klemmer said.

“We’ve been in this situation for a long time and it’s affected me a bit but I’ve learnt from that. The biggest thing for me is to improve as a player and as a person.”

And that’s why the 24-year-old has backed up Bulldogs captain Josh Jackson in refusing to believe that the club has entered a rebuilding phase.

He still hasn’t given up hope of miraculous finals push, despite being 10 points out of the top eight with nine games remaining.

“We’ve got to win every single game which is going to be pretty hard for the Dogs, but we’re not going to give up on that,” he said.

“And even then, I’ve just got to keep learning as a footy player and improve on and the off the field. That’s the positive for me. I’ve just got to keep doing that.

“I just can’t sit where I’m at. I’ve got to keep improving.”

After having Wednesday off, the Blues ramp up their preparations for game three when they have their major training run at the NSWRL centre of excellence on Thursday.

Blues captain Boyd Cordner is expected to train for the first time after missing last week’s match for the Sydney Roosters with a minor calf strain.
