When: 19:55 | Friday 01/06/2018

Where: ANZ Stadium, Sydney

Preview:

It’s such a shame to see 3 v 4 on the table go head-to-head without their full contingent.

Cronulla off the back of six straight wins will fancy themselves against a side missing four of their best and four players in lead positions.

Valentine Holmes is the only one missing for the Sharks and he’s also a winger.

A sensational one at that but a position that can be easily covered.

Replacing a hooker, backrowers and two centres, I’m not so sure of.

Both great defensive sides for 2018, this has the potential to be a close and torrid affair.

KEY BATTLE: Paul Gallen v Sam Burgess

The matchup of the old bulls Gallen v Burgess will be one to watch.

Both proud players who will try to intimidate each other all night.

This game will be won in the forwards.

The Burgess brothers have been in great touch off late and the refreshed Andrew Fifita will be raring to go along with Luke Lewis and Wade Graham who has a point to prove.

The Verdict

Too many players missing for Souths suggests that the Sharks will get the job done.

If Matt Moylan (6 try asissts, 5 line break assists) can repeat what he produced last week, they’ll win well.

The Rabbitohs have a 6-6 (50.0 percent) record playing as a home team after travelling more than 2001kms since 2013.

NRL News:

As far as first impressions go, Matt Moylan knows he and Cronulla didn’t hit it off straight away.

But the Sharks recruit is finally blossoming at his new club after steering them into the NRL top four for the first time this year with easily his best 2018 performance in a romp over Newcastle.

Moylan played a hand in seven of Cronulla’s nine tries on Sunday, including five in a dizzying 14-minute spell that showcased his entire attacking repertoire.

His six total try assists more than doubled the five he had over the opening 11 rounds for the Sharks.

He admitted being disappointed by his start at the club following his controversial move from Penrith, which included being hampered by a hamstring injury that kept him out for two matches.

“I wanted to hit the ground running and I felt like I wasn’t contributing the way I would’ve liked,” he said.

“I had a slow start to the season and I’m just happy to be playing consistent footy over the last six weeks, that we’ve been able to get some wins on the board.

“I know they haven’t been pretty but I think we’ve been building to a game like today where we had a fair few of our shapes come off and we were able to play a good brand of footy.”

The former NSW State of Origin representative has barely rated a mention in the lead-up to this year’s series as he battled form and injuries.

But despite a breakout effort against the Knights, Moylan hasn’t even considered Origin selection.

“That ship’s probably sailed at the moment. There’s a lot of people getting tossed up for that but I’m not worried about that. I’m worried about playing footy for Cronulla and playing good footy here,” he said.

Moylan isn’t the only Sharks star in that category, with Wade Graham and Josh Dugan set to be overlooked after battling separate injuries at different points through the opening 12 rounds.

It means winger Valentine Holmes could be the only player on Origin duty when Cronulla face off against a likely depleted South Sydney team on Friday.

The Rabbitohs are expected to be without Greg Inglis, Dane Gagai, Damien Cook and Angus Crichton.
