Greater Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy wants his AFL side to more than double their wins for next year.

The Giants have posted two victories in 2012, and with matches against St Kilda and in-form North Melbourne to come they’re not expected to add to that tally.

But unlike the other clubs that will miss out on the finals, Sheedy has been taking a long-term view of things for some time.

Little will be expected of the Giants’ youthful list in 2013, but Sheedy wants to make sure his Giants don’t suffer through the same second-year syndrome that dogged Gold Coast this season.

And much of that will lie with how GWS football manager Graeme Allan, list manager Stephen Silvagni and Sheedy decide to reshape the fledgling squad.

“We’ll work out how our list is going to look, because we’ve really got to get to a level of performance where we can win five, six or more games next year,” Sheedy said after his side’s 25-point win over Melbourne.

The future of veterans Chad Cornes, Dean Brogan, James McDonald and Luke Power – all prised out of retirement to play with GWS – remains unknown.

All four are on the wrong side of 30, but have been better than serviceable for GWS.

The Giants say they won’t make a decision until the end of the season.

After playing his 300th game on Saturday in Canberra, Power was still unsure about his intentions for 2013.

Sheedy suggested he wouldn’t look to talk any of the old hands out of retirement.

The four-time premiership coach has said the club will chase more experienced players, but was buoyed by how his young charges rallied in the last quarter against the Demons.

“They showed some real spirit and willpower in that last quarter, and that’s what I’m looking for,” Sheedy said.

“They played well (in the fourth term), despite being on the road for 15 or 16 matches this season – including the NAB Cup.

“So I think they’re handling that pretty well.”
