Swiss maestro Roger Federer has come from a set down to beat world No.4 Alexander Zverev 6-7 (4-7) 6-0 6-2 in Saturday night’s Hopman Cup final in Perth.
Federer was in a spot of bother after dropping the first set in 56 minutes.
But the 19-time grand slam winner bounced back with a bang, with the victory giving Switzerland a 1-0 lead against Germany in the title decider.
Belinda Bencic can secure the crown for Switzerland with victory over former world No.1 Angelique Kerber in the women’s singles rubber.
World No.74 Bencic, who missed five months last year after wrist surgery, has never dropped a set against Kerber and leads the German 3-0 head-to-head.
Federer had a set point in the 11th game of the first set.
But when Zverev held serve and then prevailed in the tiebreak, the pressure was on him to produce the goods.
He did that and more in a one-sided second set that resulted in Zverev losing his cool.
Zverev was handed a code violation after throwing his racquet towards his chair after being broken for the second time to trail 3-0.
Federer continued to pile on the pressure from that point, with Zverev’s game falling apart as the unforced errors continued to mount.
Federer was just 19 when he won the Hopman Cup in 2001, alongside then world No.1 Martina Hingis.
He narrowly missed out on making the final with Bencic last year but now has the chance to add a second Hopman Cup crown to his bulging trophy cabinet.
