Better Pumas showings on horizon: Creevy

Like all days are different, all rugby games are different.

So with that in mind, Argentina rugby captain Agustin Creevy hopes that Saturday – despite all evidence to the contrary – will be the day of the Puma.

Few have backed Creevy’s Pumas to upset the world-beating All Blacks in New Plymouth this weekend, having struggled against South Africa last month.

The 64-Test Creevy admitted his side had endured their fair share of set-piece woes in the two Tests, losing 37-15 away and 41-23 at home in Salta.

But with a little hard work, Saturday could be better.

“We all want to find the day to beat the All Blacks, like all the teams who want to find that – we hope tomorrow will be that day,” Creevy said.

“But if not, we want to try and give our best on the field.”

Now in their sixth year of Rugby Championship action, Creevy’s Pumas have struggled to make a genuine dent in the competition to date.

They’ve won just three Championship Tests since 2012, and appear to have lost their famed set-piece nous while developing their running game.

They trail this year’s Championship on successful lineouts, carries and offloads, and gave up five scrum penalties in their loss to the Boks in Port Elizabeth.

The Jaguares’ Super Rugby form has been equally shaky.

Nevertheless, Creevy insisted his side’s onerous travel schedule and poor results – for both club and country – would benefit Argentinian rugby long-term.

“I want to explain that this is part of the sacrifice we want to make, for the future of Argentinian rugby,” the 32-year-old hooker said.

“Of course we want to have better results.

“Trips, the minutes we play on the field, training – we learn that it’s not the same, Super Rugby and the Rugby Championship, the Rugby Championship and the Test matches in November. We’re taking the good points, to develop.”
