Hilfenhaus desperate for Ashes success

Ben Hilfenhaus is desperate to avoid a third straight Ashes defeat and sees the remaining one-day games against England as a chance to show Australia’s intentions ahead of next year’s heavyweight stoush.

Hilfenhaus, 29, played on the Ashes tour in 2009 and enjoyed a successful time personally with 22 wickets but the series defeat was repeated again at home in 2010-11. The Tasmanian is determined not to suffer three.

The swing bowler is yet to feature in the current one-day series, which England lead 2-0 with two to play after the washout in Birmingham.

That might surprise some given his style of bowling is perfectly suited to English conditions, especially during a wet, humid summer.

But he will have a chance of coming back into contention for the fourth match at Durham on Saturday and, if he does make the cut, Hilfenhaus is keen to dent England’s psychological edge before the Ashes come round.

“I definitely don’t want to be a part of a third losing Ashes and I think there are a lot of blokes who feel the same way,” Hilfenhaus said.

“I don’t want to look too far ahead but it will be a big series for us. You always love to beat the Poms, let’s be honest.

“We didn’t have the ideal start to this series and I think, in the last two games, we will show them exactly what we are made of – the No.1 team in the world.

“It’s nice to be playing in these conditions and it gives us a little reminder of the things we need to work on.”

Australia must win in Durham to maintain hopes of drawing the series, which finishes with a day-nighter in Manchester on Tuesday.

The Australians held onto their No.1 tag in Birmingham on Tuesday when the abandoned match denied England the 5-0 scoreline they needed to leapfrog them at the top of the one-day international world rankings.
