NSW prop Benn Robinson believes there’s plenty riding on Saturday night’s all-Wallabies front-row battle against the Brumbies at ANZ Stadium.
Robinson says he’s primed for a big performance in his 100th Waratahs appearance, while the Brumbies are desperate for a win to lock up a Super Rugby finals berth.
The Waratahs trio of Robinson, Tatafu Polota-Nau and Sekope Kepu were Robbie Deans’ choice as the starting front row for the Wallabies’ 3-0 Test series triumph over Wales last month.
However, Robinson believes their opposites at the Brumbies and understudies at the Wallabies, Dan Palmer, Stephen Moore and Ben Alexander, will be looking to prove a point ahead of Australia’s upcoming Rugby Championship campaign.
“It’s an interesting mix at the moment. We were packing down against each other only two weeks ago at Wallabies camp so we have a bit more riding on this as well, I think,” said skipper Robinson at the Waratahs’ captain’s run on Friday.
“To have that combination with Tafs and Keps there, and for those guys to be packing down with them only two weeks ago, will be good for us.”
Robinson will lock horns with 23-year-old Palmer at tight-head on Saturday, and is conscious of the fact the Brumbies took the points when the teams last met in Canberra two months ago.
“Dan’s a strong scrummager, he’s got plenty of ticker there and he was with the Waratahs before so I’ve packed down with him plenty of times,” he said.
“They gave us a fair run for our money last time we played them down there so we expect them to come out hard up front.
“They’re a world-class pack with Benny A there and Squeak (Moore).
“They’ll look for that area to put the heat on us as a front row and we enjoy that. We look forward to that battle.”
Robinson made his NSW debut back in 2004 against Salta in Argentina, and his Super Rugby start against Queensland at Suncorp Stadium in 2006.
Taking on the captaincy in the absence of Rocky Elsom this season, Robinson said it’s been a good week for reflection – as the Waratahs look to save face after a disastrous season.
“It makes me feel a bit old now playing 100 games. I came here in 2004 and I was fresh faced and pretty pumped to be with the Waratahs … it seems to have gone so quickly. But I’m excited to get out there with my mates and rip in this weekend,” he said.
