Lions ready for biggest test

Cheering on the Queensland rugby league team to victory used to be the only interstate success Brisbane Lions young gun Jack Redden knew.

He will again be yelling from the stands when Queensland takes on NSW on Wednesday night – but thanks to his revitalised AFL side, Redden is daring to dream of a win over another Sydney-based team.

Days after soaking up Origin III, Redden will again hope to be in a celebratory mood when AFL “benchmark” Sydney host the Lions on Saturday.

“I am going down to Origin on Wednesday. Hopefully the Maroons get up and so does Brissy on the weekend,” Redden said.

“They (Sydney) are the benchmark of the competition I would say, especially down on their home deck.

“The boys have had a taste of victory and we want more as a group – Sydney would be a good scalp.”

For the first time in 13 months the Lions belted out the team song for consecutive weeks after thumping Melbourne by 61 points at the Gabba on Sunday.

Suddenly a top-eight berth is up for grabs but Redden reckons the Lions have already obtained something much more precious – self-belief.

“Belief is there and it shows with the form we have had in the last four weeks,” he said.

“The feeling is good around the club. We haven’t had a 10-goal win two weeks in a row for a long time.

“The last four weeks the boys have been playing with confidence, not relying on Blacky (Simon Black) or Brownie (skipper Jonathan Brown) as much.

“The young guys are stepping up – it shows good depth.”

Redden (32 disposals) led the young brigade along with Ryan Harwood (29 touches and 12 marks) and Irishman Pearce Hanley (three goals, 24 disposals) against Melbourne to help the Lions move within a win of the eight.

But Redden baulked at finals talk.

“Not so much at this stage. I don’t think we should get ahead of ourselves,” he said.

“We need to get some momentum at the back end of the year.

“We haven’t been great against top-four sides this year.

“If we can knock one off that would be great. Sydney is a great test.”
