Pat Cummins’ England cricket tour over

Injury-prone teenager Pat Cummins’ one-day tour of the United Kingdom has come to a premature end because of a side strain injury.

The tour was viewed as an excellent chance for Cummins to gain experience before Australia return for next year’s Ashes series.

However his opportunities have been cut short because of the injury picked up during the touring side’s 15-run loss to England in the series opener at Lord’s.

Cummins went for scans on Saturday night and will fly home on Monday.

The injury will force a shake-up of the team for Sunday’s second match against England at the Oval, starting at 10.45am (1945 AEST).

Australia still have another five fast bowlers in the touring squad and were not expected to draft up a replacement.

The tour was the New South Welshman’s first for the national team since making a stunning start to international cricket in South Africa late last year.

Cummins sustained a foot injury in the Republic but had looked sharp on his return to the Australian team this month.

Australian team Doctor John Orchard, said: “Pat sustained an abdominal muscle strain on his left side during the first ODI at Lord’s. Whilst he was able to complete his ten overs, he was sore after the game and was scanned, the results of which have revealed a medium grade side-strain. This will keep him out of the remainder of the England tour. His return to cricket will be decided in due course, based on follow-up examinations in Australia.”
