Penrith boss Phil Gould’s call for the NRL to introduce an internal draft, to avoid the current inflated marquee player market, has been shot down by Wayne Bennett.
The Brisbane coach said player managers wouldn’t allow it to happen and also cited the Federal Court’s 1991 ruling that a draft was “unreasonable restraint of trade”.
“That won’t happen unfortunately,” Bennett said of Gould’s suggestion. “We had our chance 20 years ago to grab it but it was taken to court and the draft was over.”
