Brisbane skipper Sam Thaiday is resigned to battling through the NRL season with a bung shoulder which will eventually require surgery.
Having built the strength back up in his injured shoulder, he’s confident of sharing in teammate Petero Civoniceva’s 300th NRL game against South Sydney at Suncorp on Friday night.
“I’ll probably hurt it again this year at some stage,” said Thaiday when asked if he was taking a risk playing so close to next month’s State of Origin series decider.
“It’ll be an up and down thing but, if I look after it and get a little bit of love from the physio, keep the strength up – I should be fine until the end of the season.”
Thaiday is receiving treatment for a labrum tear in his shoulder and has been having intensive physiotherapy to strengthen the rotator cuff.
“I had to get a bit of strength back in it and some confidence – that was the biggest thing,” he said after training on Tuesday.
Thaiday injured his shoulder while scoring a try against Newcastle earlier this month.
He said it forced him to make the hardest decision of his career missing the second Origin clash in Sydney last week.
Queensland kept his injury quiet until he packed his bags and broke camp on the Friday before the big game.
“It was the hardest thing ever and just as hard as sitting on the couch at home watching the game. It was a very tough call,” he said.
“It (shoulder) was pretty weak. I tried to go into camp and I tried to play but it wasn’t going to happen.
“I was struggling to put deodorant under my arm at the start of the week so I think I was kidding myself a bit for a while there.”
“Origin is such a tough game, you don’t want to go in at 50 per cent.”
Thaiday and Broncos lock Corey Parker (leg cut) are both hoping to be cleared on Thursday to play in Civoniceva’s milestone game against the Rabbitohs.
