Arthur open to unleashing young quicks

Coach Mickey Arthur is open to the idea of exciting young quicks Pat Cummins and James Pattinson combining for the first time for Australia in the upcoming one-day series against England.

Cummins and Pattinson have never played together in the senior team despite their performances having re-energised the national side in the past 12 months.

“I think there might be an opportunity down the line,” Arthur said.

“We have a good stock of fast bowlers and there are places up for grabs.

“These three warm-up games are going to determine who plays.

“There is a lot to play for, certainly in the fast bowling department.”

The Australian team trained in Leicester on Monday afternoon for the first time on tour in gloomy conditions.

Arthur said he did not seen any point in shielding the inexperienced pair of Cummins and Pattinson from the English batsmen before next year’s Ashes tour.

“They would just analyse them anyway,” Arthur said.

“I would rather see them getting some really good opportunities in some conditions out here in England that will broaden their game.”

Cummins and Pattinson face competition from fellow quicks Brett Lee, Ben Hilfenhaus, Mitchell Johnson and Clint McKay for spots in the team.

Clarke said the young speedsters would have to learn to adjust to the slower pitches in England.

“It does not matter how fast you are over here,” he said.

“If you are not accurate …”

About half of Australia’s 15-man squad has never played one-day internationals in England and Arthur said it was important for them to get a taste of the conditions.

Australia open their three-week tour with a tour match against Leicestershire on Thursday at Grace Road.

The tourists will play Ireland in a one-day international in Belfast on Saturday and Essex at Chelmsford three days later.

The five-match one-day series against England starts on June 29 at Lord’s.

Meanwhile Cummins has been named in the Australian under 19 squad for the World Cup to be played in Brisbane in August.
