Jolly says Magpies are on track in AFL

Collingwood ruckman Darren Jolly is determined to continue writing newspaper columns despite the negative reaction to his piece which labelled ex-Melbourne coach Neale Daniher as intimidating.

Jolly said in last week’s column in The Age that when he was a young player at Melbourne, he found Daniher to be a coach who relied on the stick method rather than the carrot.

Jolly thrived when he moved to Sydney, where he found Swans coach Paul Roos more approachable and inspirational.

Roos and Jolly helped the Swans claim the 2005 AFL flag and Jolly joined Collingwood in 2010, playing in a second premiership side.

“What I said about Neale, and that’s probably the criticism I’ve had from that article, I didn’t say he was a bad person or he was a bad coach,” Jolly told reporters on Thursday.

“I just quoted how I felt in my time at Melbourne. I didn’t see anything wrong with that and I’ve had a lot of positive feedback from it as well.

“I like doing it. It’s something new.

“I’ll continue to do it.”

Jolly is contracted at Collingwood until the end of the 2013 season and says he’s not sure if he wants to go into coaching.

The 30-year-old is over the knee troubles which restricted him to 16 games last year.

Jolly missed two games earlier this month because of a sore Achilles but he’s back to full fitness as the fourth-placed Magpies prepare to take on winless Gold Coast at the MCG on Sunday.

The injury-hit Magpies are premiership favourites after their courageous victory over the Crows in Adelaide last week.

However Jolly says he’s taking little notice.

“We’re not walking around touting ourselves as premiership favourites,” he said.

“We’re just making sure that we play our best footy each week and certainly peak at the business end of the season.”

Jolly, who’s set to play his 216th game and 50th with the Magpies, said it was a privilege to reach the half-century at Collingwood and play under Mick Malthouse and Nathan Buckley.

Meanwhile the Magpies have announced injured defender Lachie Keeffe, 22, has signed a contract extension until the end of the 2014 season.
