Eagles fly high in AFL

West Coast are the AFL’s only unbeaten team after they withstood a strong challenge from North Melbourne to win by 25 points.

Sydney’s unbeaten run ended in round six when Adelaide beat them in a Saturday night thriller at the SCG, where star Swans forward Adam Goodes also suffered a leg injury.

North led as late as the third quarter at Patersons Stadium and only trailed by 13 point at the last change.

But the Eagles kicked five goals to three in the final term and won 17.18 (120) to 15.5 (95).

In a horror weekend for injuries, Eagles ruckman Nic Naitanui was a late withdrawal with a sore hamstring, while teammate Adam Selwood suffered a nasty-looking hand injury.

After two near-misses against Geelong and West Coast, Richmond finally broke through for their second win of the season.

The Tigers were too strong for Port Adelaide on Sunday at AAMI Stadium, winning by 37 points.

Richmond key forward Jack Riewoldt kicked four goals in the 13.13 (91) to 8.6 (54) win.

As expected, Carlton easily beat Greater Western Sydney by 67 points earlier in the day at Etihad Stadium.

But the Giants pushed the Blues in the first half and Carlton coach Brett Ratten gave his side only five out of 10 as they won 15.20 (110) to 6.7 (43).

Playing his first game for GWS, former Carlton key forward Setanta O’hAilipin hurt his knee and might need a season-ending reconstruction.

The Crows continued to impress on Saturday night at the SCG with their 15.9 (99) to 14.10 (94) win over the Swans.

A week after Sydney split them open in the second half, Hawthorn also returned to form with a 35-point win over St Kilda at the MCG.

Cyril Rioli was best afield with six goals and fellow Hawks star Lance Franklin kicked 5.6 in the 18.15 (123) to 13.10 (88) win.

Gold Coast nearly staged a major upset for their first win of the season at home on Saturday against Fremantle.

But the Dockers kicked three of the last four goals in the match to win by seven points, 14.10 (94) to 14.3 (87).

The other two Saturday afternoon matches were all one-way traffic, with Essendon smashing Brisbane 19.15 (129) to 9.8 (62).

Melbourne were much more respectable at Simonds Stadium than their 186-point disaster last season, but Geelong were always in control and won 17.17 (119) to 11.10 (76).

Collingwood opened round six on Friday night at Etihad Stadium with a hard-fought 22-point win over the Western Bulldogs.

The Magpies pulled clear in the final term to win 15.8 (98) to 11.11 (77).
