Force have point to prove, says Pocock

Western Force skipper David Pocock always knew their upcoming Super Rugby clash with Queensland would be big.

But after their heart-stopping one-point loss to Melbourne, the importance of the match next Saturday to their finals hopes has gone up a notch.

The Force have now lost four of their five games; already beaten once this season in round two by the Reds 35-20.

“It’s very important,” said Pocock after the Rebels fought back to secure a 30-29 win at AAMI Park.

“It’s obviously a huge game for us.

“Two weeks on the road and five points to show for it, we would have preferred eight, so we’ve got to go home and win at home.

“I think we really owe it to our fans to win at home.”

The Force may be without tireless lock Sam Wykes, who was assisted from the field midway through the first half with a foot injury.

Reserve back Justin Turner is also in extreme doubt after leaving the ground with his knee in a brace.

Force coach Richard Graham was a frustrated man after his side had the week previously shown such composure to beat NSW by a point.

The Force fought back from 21-0 down to lead 29-27 only for Pocock to concede a penalty at the breakdown in the 71st minute, which was cooly slotted by Melbourne winger Mark Gerrard.

Graham lamented his side’s lack of discipline and poor kicking game.

“When you’re 21-0 down, you either pack up and go home and get pulped or you show a bit of character and resolve and do what they did,” Graham said.

“But when you get in that situation you’ve got to manage them better.”
