Reds, Force into Brisbane Tens quarters

The Queensland Reds and Western Force are the only Australian sides through to the quarter-finals of the Brisbane Global Rugby Tens.

The Reds secured their spot with a 12-5 win over Samoa at a steaming Suncorp Stadium on Sunday morning while the Force – who won just one of their three of their pool matches – qualified courtesy of other results.

The Brumbies, meanwhile, became an unfortunate victim of the tournament’s unbalanced groupings.

Coach Stephen Larkham was convinced they would qualify after winning two of their three games on Saturday, but they finished bottom of a three-team Pool C on points differential.

They join the NSW Waratahs and the Melbourne Rebels, who were also eliminated after playing against each other early on Sunday, while Samoa, the Blues and French glamour club Toulon also crashed out.

Toulon, who didn’t field James O’Connor (ankle) in any of their matches, scored just one try for the tournament.

The Waratahs won 14-12 over the Rebels to record their first and only win of the tournament, but it wasn’t enough to lift them into Pool A’s top two positions because of a large negative points differential.

The other result in that group on day two, the Chiefs’ 33-5 win over the Panasonic Wild Knights, also put the Rebels out of finals calculations.

The Reds face the Chiefs in their quarter-final while the Force take on South Africa’s Blue Bulls, who recorded a stirring 26-17 win against the Highlanders to move to the top of Pool C at the expense of the Brumbies.

The only team to get through the pools undefeated was the Crusaders.

They will meet the Wild Knights for a spot in the semi-finals.
