Kieron Pollard belted a wonderful century as the West Indies defeated Australia by 42 runs in the fourth one-dayer in St Lucia on Friday.
The all-rounder smashed 102 off just 70 deliveries in a brutal display of power-hitting as the Windies claimed an unbeatable 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
Pollard teamed with Andre Russell (34 off 32) and Darren Sammy (31no off 13) as Australia’s bowling was torn apart at the Beausejour Stadium, the hosts smashing 117 off the last 10 overs to post 7-294.
Chasing a venue-record 295 for victory, Brett Lee provided some big hitting of his own to score 59 off 48 balls with five sixes but was the last man to fall as Australia were dismissed for 252.
Lee had earlier in the day been smacked for 72 runs off his 10 overs, including 23 off the final over of the West Indies innings.
Australia captain Shane Watson congratulated Pollard on his knock but, after granting the 24-year-old a few lives in his innings, he acknowledged his team’s display hadn’t been up to standard.
“There was definitely a bit of individual brilliance from Kieron Pollard, there’s no doubt about it,” Watson said.
“To see his striking was very impressive but there’s no doubt it’s not good enough from us.
“It’s a small ground so his power is always keeping him in the game but dropping him three times certainly didn’t help as well as our execution in the last 10 overs especially.”
The victory puts the West Indies one game away from sealing their first ODI series against Australia since 1995.
And Pollard said completing the victory in Sunday’s final game in St Lucia would be a big lift for the whole Caribbean.
“It would mean a lot,” he said.
“It’d be great, us winning, not just for us but for the fans and public of the West Indies.
“Hopefully we can deliver for each and every one of them.”
Sunday’s final match of the series begins at 9.30am (0030 Monday AEDT).
