Emerging Port Adelaide forward John Butcher could miss the start of the AFL premiership season after being reported in Friday night’s 48-point pre-season win over Melbourne.
Butcher was reported for rough conduct after crashing into Melbourne’s Colin Sylvia in the final term of Port’s resounding 17.10 (112) to 9.10 (64) victory at AAMI Stadium.
The collision sparked an all-in melee involving all players on the field except Sylvia – he was stretchered from the ground with hip and back injuries.
Butcher faces a likely suspension for Port Adelaide’s premiership season opener against St Kilda on April 1.
The Power also have a fresh injury concern with key defender Jackson Trengove dislocating a finger and being substituted out of Friday night’s fixture.
The worries marred an encouraging display from Port, who ambushed the Demons early with a six goal to two opening term.
Melbourne never seriously threatened thereafter, despite three goals to their star recruit Mitch Clark.
Port were brilliantly served by Danyle Pearce, who gathered 33 disposals and is relishing his new role across the half-back line.
Veteran Kane Cornes (31 disposals) was also prominent while Jay Schulz booted three goals.
