Nick Kyrgios has suffered an upset first-round loss to local teenage wildcard Denis Shapovalov at the Toronto Masters.
Kyrgios, the 11th seed, went down 7-6(2) 3-6 6-3 to 17-year-old Shapovalov in a day of mixed fortunes for Australia, with Bernard Tomic winning through to the second round.
Tomic beat Colombian Alejandro Gonzalez 6-4 7-6 (1) to book a place in the second round against Canadian Steven Diez.
“I feel like here’s a good chance for me,” Tomic said.
“I really have to focus and really go for my shots and relax if I want to make a quarter or semi.”
Diez upset Britain’s Kyle Edmund 3-6 6-3 6-2 to advance to the second round.
