Ferguson in Origin frame for NSW

Blake Ferguson has come into contention for the NSW side for State of Origin III, with Blues coach Laurie Daley refusing to rule out making changes to his matchwinning game two outfit.

Ferguson continued to show improvement in Sydney Roosters’ 19-14 win over St George Illawarra on Monday night, in his second match back from a foot injury that made him unavailable for Origin I and II.

The injury suffered in March stalled the former Blues winger’s promising return to the NRL this season after a year out.

Ferguson’s one and only Origin appearance was in 2013 before off-field issues sent his career trajectory downward.

But he could be key to the Blues hopes at Suncorp Stadium on July 8.

“I will see how he goes in the next two games,” Daley said when asked about Ferguson’s selection chances for the decider.

“You would never say never, but I don’t know (if he is a chance), I will see how he goes.”

Will Hopoate has been quiet on the right wing in both Origin games this year and the Parramatta star could make way for Ferguson.

Daley said he wasn’t averse to making changes to his side that won in Melbourne last week.

“You never know what team you are going to get,” he said.

“When you analyse you want to get better and I know we can get better.”

The expected conditions could influence that.

“We have to work out where we can best beat Queensland in Queensland,” he said.

“Where the weather will be fine, the track will be good and it will be a fast open game.

“It won’t be a nice welcome. It will be pretty hectic. It is like that every time you go to Suncorp and that is what you expect.

“That is what creates the drama and the theatre of Origin, everyone loves going there because it is such a great venue.

“It is Hodgos’ (Justin Hodges’) last game. Queensland off the back of losing (Origin II) will have steam coming out of their ears so it is going to be a monumental challenge for us.”
