Adelaide’s perfect AFL pre-season continued with a 51-point trouncing of Brisbane on Saturday night in Alice Springs.
The Crows joined West Coast as the only unbeaten clubs in the pre-season cup, winning 0.14.9 (93) to 1.5.3 (42) over the Lions at Traeger Park.
Adelaide tall Shaun McKernan and recruits Tom Lynch and Josh Jenkins each kicked two goals and the Crows also had 10 other goal-kickers in a comprehensive win over a largely inexperienced Brisbane outfit.
Adelaide also rested a bunch of their regulars, but Patrick Dangerfield led by example in his first match as acting captain.
Dangerfield collected 33 disposals in a best-afield performance and Rory Sloane gathered 22 touches in an influential performance.
Brisbane’s reliable onballers Jack Redden and Tom Rockliff were prolific possession winners, while James Polkinghorne and youngsters Mitchell Goldby and Ryan Harwood were also prominent.
But the Lions struggled for attacking cohesion, failing to turn an initial dominance of possession into scores.
Brisbane had 88 disposals to Adelaide’s 60 in the first term yet still trailed the efficient Crows by eight points at quarter time.
Adelaide hammered home their advantage with a dominant second term in which they kicked four goals while holding the Lions scoreless.
The Crows took a commanding 34-point lead into half-time, but the Lions briefly challenged in the third stanza.
A nine-point super goal to Brisbane veteran Ashley McGrath reduced the margin to 17 points, but Adelaide responded in style.
Classy Crow Jason Porplyzia was critical as Adelaide kicked away, the gifted utility gathering 16 touches in just two quarters of his comeback match.
Porplyzia played only five minutes of last season before injuring a shoulder, which required a season-ending reconstruction.
Adelaide also unveiled their 17-year-old draftee Brad Crouch, who is unable to play in the premiership season due to his young age.
Crouch looked at home in his first AFL outing with 13 disposals.
