Germany’s Angelique Kerber has become the first woman to make it through to the quarter-finals at the Brisbane International.
The fifth seed defeated Russian qualifier Daria Gavrilova 6-3 7-5 in an hour and a half at Pat Rafter Arena to move into the last eight.
Kerber is one of just four of the eight women’s seeds left in the tournament.
She’ll next face the winner of the match between Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina and Croatian wildcard Alja Tomljanovic, which will be played later on Tuesday afternoon.
Top seed Maria Sharapova will be in action against Kazakhstan qualifier Yaroslava Shvedova in Tuesday’s evening session.
