Adam Scott won’t meet world No.1 Rory McIlroy in the opening two rounds of the Australian Open, as organisers try to get the most out of the event’s headline talent.
The top-ranked pair will be separated in a bid to boost crowd numbers by spreading big names across the schedule ahead of Thursday’s opening round at The Australian course in Sydney.
“We will spread out the superstars across the draw to ensure as many people as possible see them,” Golf Australia championship director Trevor Herden said.
“Obviously spectators will want to see the stars but some might only have a morning free, some an afternoon.
“So on the first two days, to provide options for spectators, we will continue to give them that chance.”
The Masters, US and British Opens, and US PGA had also separated the players during the season, he noted.
The earliest the world’s two best golfers can pair up will be in the third round on Saturday.
Scott has said he’ll be out for revenge when he takes on the Northern Irishman.
Last year, McIlroy prevented Scott from winning his second national title and becoming the second player to win the sport’s Triple Crown after victories at the Australian Masters and PGA.
“I’ve still got a thorn in my side about the Australian Open last year,” Scott said.
The opening-round draw will be finalised on Tuesday.
