Big-hitting opener David Warner won the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year Award on Monday at Cricket Australia’s Allan Border Medal count.
The former Twenty20 specialist burst onto the Test scene this summer with a century in his second Test against New Zealand in Hobart in December and a memorable hundred off 69 balls against India in Perth in January.
Warner’s stunning effort in Perth was the equal-fourth fastest century in Test history and the NSW pocket rocket leapt into the air in celebration in front of a delighted crowd at the WACA.
Victoria paceman James Pattinson polled 20 per cent of players’ votes while South Australia’s Tom Cooper was third on 16 per cent, trailing Warner’s 29 per cent.
Pace sensation Pattinson, 21, was man of the match twice in his first four Tests before breaking down in January 2011 with a foot injury.
Warner, 25, qualified for the award as he was 24 or under at the start of the voting period in February 6 2011 and had not played more than 10 first-class matches.
