Warriors win the main thing for Mannering

Skipper Simon Mannering was typically down-to-earth after he marked his double milestone in the NRL with two tries.

Mannering, who was bringing up 200 first-grade appearances and his 100th as skipper, crossed twice in the opening spell as the Warriors beat Newcastle 38-18 in Auckland on Sunday.

“It was nice to get over the line – I don’t get over too often – and just pleased to get the win also,” the 27-year-old said.

“It’s been a nice week and the boys have been really good, but the focus was on the game and getting the job done first.”

Mannering’s first try featured an unlikely grubber kick ahead and regather.

“I’ve had a few bad experiences kicking the footy,” he said.

“That one thankfully came off.”

Warriors coach Andrew McFadden had no doubts about the contribution Mannering made against the Knights.

“It was phenomenal, to be honest with you,” he said.

“It was a bit of a danger game. We knew the opposition was going to turn up – Simon really led the way.”

McFadden said it was a credit to Mannering and his preparation that he could put all the attention over the double milestone aside.

A centre and backrower, Mannering made his NRL debut as an 18-year-old in 2005 and his latest tries took his career tally to 47.

Newcastle coach Wayne Bennett, who was as assistant coach as part of the Kiwis’ successful 2008 World Cup campaign with Mannering, was also full of praise.

“He’s been a wonderful player and he’s a great guy to work with,” Bennett said.

“He’s got the respect of anyone who has played against him or coached him. He brings his best every week.”
