Hinkley wary of young GWS danger

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley knows firsthand that the excitement of youth means Greater Western Sydney’s three match losing streak will count for very little during Saturday’s AFL clash.

Having previously been an assistant coach at Gold Coast, Hinkley speaks from experience when he says the Giants will have quickly put their past few weeks behind them to solely concentrate on knocking off his competition-leading side come Saturday.

The Giants looked very promising early in the season with wins over Sydney and Melbourne, but have since slumped with solid defeats at the hands of the Bulldogs, Adelaide and the Suns.

“What they don’t do in those young clubs is dwell on what happened last week,” Hinkley said.

“They move on really quick. They’re young, they’re full of excitement.

“You can expect that they’ll be right at the game this week.”

While the Power are sitting on the top of the table with five wins and one loss, Hinkley played down his side’s early season success.

“It’s nice that we’re sitting there, but it’s round six, we’re actually no different to what we were last year in regards to win-loss,” he said.

“If it’s round 23 and we’re there we’ll be much happier.”

Hinkley also addressed the Giants’ 34-point win over the Power back in the 2012 season – in what was just GWS’s second win in their inaugural season.

“It’s what you build up in your experience bank isn’t it?” said Hinkley.

“The GWS experience for some of our boys, they learnt from that I’m sure.”

Returning for the Power this week will be one of their most dangerous players, Angus Monfries.

“He would have played last week (if it was a final), we made sure we didn’t take any risks with him,” Hinkley said.

Meanwhile Giants forward Jeremy Cameron has been named to play after undergoing a procedure on a perforated eardrum earlier this week.
