SNAPSHOT OF THE FIRST WEEK OF THE TWO-WEEK ROUND ONE OF THE AFL SEASON:
THEY SAID IT: “We’re not going to put it to the side and say it’s just another game. It’s a significant moment in our footy club going forward.” – Greater Western Sydney coach Leon Cameron after his side’s upset win over Sydney.
STATS THAT MATTER: One. The number of times fourth-year expansion club Gold Coast and third-year expansion club Greater Western Sydney have won on the same weekend.
MAN OF THE WEEK: Gold Coast captain and dual Brownlow Medallist Gary Ablett served up a 41-possession, two-goal performance to lead his young side to an 18-point victory over Richmond.
KEY MOMENT: Trailing by three points at three-quarter time in Saturday’s game against Sydney, GWS kicked six unanswered goals in the final term to claim a 32-point win in a milestone day for the Giants.
TALKING POINT: Can you play only three quarters and earn three Brownlow votes? Fremantle midfielder Nat Fyfe had 20 disposals including 15 contested possessions, nine clearances and a goal despite being rested for the final term. The reigning club champion played a key role in shaping Fremantle’s 70-point win with a stunning second-quarter display after the Dockers and Collingwood had kicked two goals each in the opening term.
TRIBUNAL WATCH: nil.
KEY INJURIES: T Goldsack (Coll, calf), R Palmer (GWS, hamstring), L Roberts-Thomson (Syd, groin), K Jack (Syd, back), A Johnson (Syd, season-ending knee injury in reserves game), C Dixon (GC, concussion) J Martin (GC, shoulder).
WHAT’S NEXT: The extended rollout of round one continues on Thursday night at Simonds Stadium where Geelong will host Adelaide, followed by North Melbourne’s clash with Essendon at Etihad Stadium the following night. Other round-one games to come next weekend are: Hawthorn v Brisbane, St Kilda v Melbourne and West Coast v Western Bulldogs.
