NSW cruise past WA’s first innings total

Test and West Australia batsman Shaun Marsh has registered his third straight duck as NSW cruised past the Warrior’s ninth-lowest innings total of 82 in their Sheffield Shield clash in Canberra.

NSW pacemen Josh Hazlewood and Doug Bollinger ripped through the Warriors’ top order on the usually batting-friendly Manuka Oval deck, finishing with four wickets apiece.

Australia’s number one Test spinner, Nathan Lyon, also chimed in with two WA scalps.

NSW lost the early wicket of opener Ryan Carters (3) in reply, but captain and Aussie Test hero Steve Smith (48) steadied the ship to help put his side 45 runs ahead at 4-127 at stumps on the first day.

The Warriors’ dismal first innings severely dents their finals hopes, as they were equal first on 26 points alongside NSW and South Australia heading into the final round of Shield matches.

The visitors failed to capitalise on captain Adam Voges’ decision to bat first, and their top five batsman scraped together just 14 runs to be reduced to 5-15 in the eighth over.

Following his 148 against South Africa in the first Test, Marsh’s run of first-class ducks was extended to three when he was clean bowled second ball by Bollinger.

The 30-year-old was dropped for the decider in South Africa after registering a pair in the second Test.

Bollinger also claimed the prized scalp of Voges, and then spinner Ashton Agar, who temporarily slowed the rot.

Hazlewood finished the innings with career-best first-class figures of 4-14, opening his account by trapping Marcus North lbw for a second-ball duck in the second over, then dismissing WA’s other opener, Cam Bancroft (4).

NSW opener Nic Maddinson (30) provided the hosts with a good start before going after Agar one too many times and holing out in the deep.

Agar then (2-45) picked up Smith in the final hour of the day to give his side a sliver of hope.
