In the news:

Scott Brunton’s Caulfield Cup dream with Banca Mo was shattered last spring because of injury to the Warrnambool Cup winner.

The six-year-old is scheduled to make his comeback on Saturday at Flemington having not started since his dominant victory in the country Victorian feature last May.

Banca Mo was being prepared for a spring preparation aimed at the Caulfield Cup when Brunton discovered a bone chip.

“He had done four to six weeks work and I saw a small lump in his hock. Alarm bells went off straight away and we found a bone chip,” Brunton, who trains in partnership with his father David in Tasmania, said.

“We’re OK and are back on track now but it gutted me at the time. He was $21 for the Caulfield Cup and you’re talking about a $2000 horse from Tassie.”

Banca Mo is nominated for Saturday’s Listed Super Saturday Stakes.

The 25 nominations for the 1400m race include Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner.

While Banca Mo has not yet reached the heights of former stablemate and multiple stakes winner Lady Lynette, Brunton rates the gelding potentially the best horse he has trained.

“He won the Warrnambool Cup like a good horse with 58 kilos on his back. He won it by five lengths,” Brunton said.

Brunton is looking forward to getting the horse back to the races but having experienced the disappointment of missing the spring, Brunton is also cautious.

“He looks a million dollars. I’m very happy with him,” he said.

“I don’t want to get my hopes up, but every day he’s sound I’m happy.”

Banca Mo has won 11 of his 21 starts.
