Tomic battles through in Stockholm

Australia’s Bernard Tomic has spent nearly two hours on court to record his first main-draw win since the US Open in reaching the second round of the Stockholm Open.

Tomic did not have things all his own way against Swedish wild card Patrik Rosenholm but battled to a 7-6 (7-1) 5-7 6-4 victory.

Tomic next meets third seed Kevin Anderson while Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili set up a clash with defending champion Grigor Dimitrov by beating Alejandro Falla 6-2 6-4.

Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen is making his 15th consecutive appearance at the tournament and the three-time finalist made a winning start, defeating Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-4 6-4.

Nieminen put constant pressure on his opponent’s serve but only converted three of the 11 break points he created.

Top-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, making his fifth appearance at the tournament, has a bye into the second round. So does defending champion and second-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria.
