Stosur powers into US Open second round

Samantha Stosur has made a sizzling start to her US Open title defence, blasting her way into the second round and barely breaking sweat.

Stosur needed only 51 minutes to storm past Croatian Petra Martic 6-1 6-1 in an awesome display of power tennis.

Australia’s seventh seed was the first big gun through to the second round and next faces Romanian qualifier Edina Gallovits-Hall or Swiss Stefanie Voegele for a place in the last 32 at Flushing Meadows.

In a spectacular opening, Stosur looked on track to record a rare “golden set” as she won the first 19 points of the match, hammering down five aces in the process.

Martic finally managed to get on the board after 11 minutes when Stosur double-faulted and then held serve in the sixth game to avoid a first-set bagel on debut at Arthur Ashe Stadium – world tennis’s biggest arena.

After nabbing the first set in 22 minutes, Stosur continued the onslaught in the second.

The world No.7 broke Martic in the opening game and thundered down two more aces to hold to love for 2-0.

Stosur broke Martic for a fourth time to charge ahead 4-1, then unleashed her 10th ace to hold to love once more.

The Queenslander closed out the contest on her first match point and, all up, clubbed 22 winners to Martic’s seven and committed just 11 unforced errors for the match.
