Saville’s Aus Open tennis campaign over

Luke Saville has withdrawn from the Australian Open wildcard play-off with a hamstring injury.

The No.1 seed was due to play Jordan Thompson in a semi-final on Friday, but informed tournament organisers he would be unable to take his place on Thursday afternoon.

Saville appeared unhindered on Wednesday when he defeated eighth seed Gavin Van Peperzeel in four sets.

The injury is a bitter blow for the 20-year-old who had been looking to build on a positive year where he won through to the main draw at Wimbledon.

In women’s singles action, No.1 seed Olivia Rogowska moved closer to claiming a coveted wildcard on Thursday.

Rogowska, 23, continued her run of good form at Melbourne Park as she claimed a semi-final berth with a straight sets win over Canberra’s Alison Bai.

It followed her impressive start to the wildcard play-off when she dispatched Seone Mendez 6-1 6-0 in the opening round.

Rogowska, currently ranked 128 in the world, will meet Daria Gavrilova in Saturday’s semi-final after the third seed accounted for Abbie Myers in straight sets.
