Sara Tomic eyeing Australian Open start

Sara Tomic is hoping to join big brother Bernard in the Australian Open main draw.

The talented 16-year-old is unseeded for the women’s Open wildcard playoff getting underway at Melbourne Park on Monday.

Tomic opens against fourth seed Arina Rodionova in one of the marquee match-ups.

Top seed Olivia Rogowska faces Seone Mendez, veteran second seed Anastasia Rodionova meets Naiktha Bains and third seed Daria Gavrilova takes on Lizette Cabrera.

Former Australian Open and Wimbledon junior champion Luke Saville headlines the men’s draw and plays Chris O’Connell in the first round.

Second seed JP Smith plays Jacob Grills, while last year’s wildcard playoff winner Jordan Thompson launches his bid for another start against in-form Tasmanian Harry Bourchier.

Bourchier is a late addition into the event after winning the national under-18s title at Melbourne Park on Saturday.
