Safiullin and Mihalikova Aust Open champs

Russian No.1 seed Roman Safiullin and unseeded Slovakian Tereza Mihalikova have claimed the 2015 Australian Open junior boys’ and girls’ titles.

Safiullin, 17, lived up to his top billing as he overcame South Korean Seong-chan Hong 7-5 7-6 (7-2) on Saturday, while Mihalikova dispatched 14th-seeded Brit Katie Swan 6-1 6-4 on Rod Laver Arena.

Mihalikova, from the Slovak Republic, was unseeded in the tournament, but put on a powerful display of tennis – including a third-round defeat of local hope Sara Tomic – to reach the final.

The match wasn’t without drama with the young Brit hampered by a groin strain that she received treatment for in the second set.

Mihalikova missed two championship points before claiming the title on the third.

“I won the first set really, I can say, easy but the second set, at the beginning I made a few mistakes,” Mihalikova said.

“But I still felt like I can win this thing, and I want to win in two sets, not to go to the third, as in the first three rounds.

“When she went to the medical … I said, ‘Okay, Tereza, come on; win this in two sets’. I started to believe in myself and I’m happy I did it.”
