Robredo ends Groth’s US Open campaign

Spanish veteran Tommy Robredo has ended Sam Groth’s US Open with a straight-sets second-round win at Flushing Meadows.

Robredo had sent Roger Federer and Nick Kyrgios packing from the past two US Opens and was always going to be a tough proposition for the Australian.

The 26th seed won 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 to leave Bernard Tomic and Lleyton Hewitt as the last remaining Australians in the men’s singles draw.

Tomic, seeded 24th, and former champion Hewitt clash on Thursday in the first career meeting between the Davis Cup teammates.
