Pole pulls off surprise at Brisbane Int

The top seeds keep falling at the Brisbane International with men’s fifth seed Kevin Anderson knocked out by a qualifier on Tuesday.

Anderson, the world No.16, was beaten 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 by Poland’s Lukasz Kubot to join French pair Gilles Simon and Julien Benneteau on the first round scrapheap.

Anderson made just 56 per cent of his first serves in the match, which lasted for one hour and 50 minutes.

Kubot, the world No.177, will now play defending champion Lleyton Hewitt or Sam Groth in the second round.

Hewitt and his fellow Australian play later on Tuesday.

Another Australian, Marinko Matosevic, is also in action on Tuesday, taking on the United States’ Steve Johnson for a spot in the second round against Japan’s Kei Nishikori.
