Murray, Berdych, Baghdatis into last 32

Andy Murray has steamrolled local hope Marinko Matosevic on his way to the Australian Open third round.

The three-time runner-up at Melbourne Park made short work of the Victorian, winning 6-1 6-3 6-2 in just 102 minutes.

Despite his friendship with Matosevic, Murray said pre-match that he was out to break Australian hearts in the marquee match.

He did just that on Margaret Court Arena, crushing Matosevic’s spirit in a 21-minute opening set and making just 12 unforced errors for the match.

By contrast, Matosevic made 49 blunders, ensuring his first appearance in the Open’s second round would be short and far from sweet.

Murray said the scoreline didn’t reflect the closeness of the contest.

“There was a lot of tight games, a few of them could have gone either way but I managed to win those ones,” he said.

The sixth seed will be joined in the round of 32 by Tomas Berdych, who won through with a straight-sets defeat of Austrian Jurgen Melzer.

The seventh-seeded Czech was tested in the first set but powered through a tiebreak and never looked back.

His 7-6 (7-0) 6-2 6-2 victory came in two hours and three minutes.

Berdych, who boasts one of the most effective serves on tour, hit just nine aces.

He said he wasn’t concerned by a less prolific serving effort than last year, when he won through to the semi-finals.

“It’s going in a good direction,” he said.

“In the tough situations and the tough points, I’m able to help myself with the serve.”

Berdych, who announced his engagement to model partner Ester Satorova on Tuesday, will play Viktor Troicki in the third round.

Troicki continued his fine 2015 form by defeating 26th seed Leonardo Mayer in four sets.

The Sydney International winner defeated his seventh straight opponent ranked inside the world’s top 70 with a 6-4 4-6 6-4 6-0 victory.

Rising Belgian and 20th seed David Goffin was defeated by 2006 Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis 6-1 6-4 4-6 6-0, while 24th seed Richard Gasquet beat Australian wildcard James Duckworth 6-2 6-3 7-5.
