Muguruza into Open second round

Spanish third seed Garbine Muguruza declared herself back to full fitness after moving effortlessly into the second round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park.

In her first match since withdrawing from the Brisbane International with a foot injury, Muguruza outclassed Estonian Anett Kontaveit 6-0 6-4 in precisely an hour on Rod Laver Arena.

“I had a few problems in my foot but I think I am recovered now,” the 2015 Wimbledon finalist said after breaking her opponent four times and being completely untroubled on her own serve.

Muguruza, who will play either Belgian Kirsten Flipkens or Croatian Mirjana Lucic-Baroni for a place in the last 32, said she was focused from the get-go.

“I am very happy. I was very nervous,” she said.

“Every match is very diff (sic). You always have to be prepared, always have to be ready for the other player to make a great performance.

“Always the first rounds are really tough but I’m really excited to be back here and into the second round.”

Russian Ekaterina Makarova, the 21st seed, also progressed on Tuesday, dispatching Australian teenager Maddison Inglis 6-3 6-0 with a minimum of fuss.
