Muguruza, Halep into French Open 4th round

Garbine Muguruza has become the first player to reach the fourth round at the French Open by beating Yanina Wickmayer 6-3 6-0.

The fourth-seeded Spaniard lost one service game in the first set but otherwise encountered little resistance from her Belgian opponent, who has yet to get past the third round in nine visits to Roland Garros.

World No.54 Wickmayer had no break points in the second set and saved none of the six she faced on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Muguruza, who was the runner-up at Wimbledon last year and reached the quarter-finals at the French Open in 2014 and 2015, had an impressive ratio of 19 winners to only 11 unforced errors.

Joining her in the last 16 is Romanian sixth seed Simona Halep who has dropped the first set before beating Naomi Osaka of Japan 4-6 6-2 6-3.

Halep awaits the winner of the third-round clash between Australian 21st seed Samantha Stosur and Czech No.11 Lucie Safarova.
