Millman out of China Open in first round

Australia’s John Millman is out of the China Open ATP event after losing his opening round match 6-4 3-6 6-3 against seventh seed Roberto Bautista-Agut in Beijing.

Bautista-Agut will next play Kyle Edmund, who booked his place in the second round with a comfortable victory over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. The British No.2 needed just 66 minutes to secure a 6-3 6-2 win.

Fifth seed David Ferrer reached the second round with a 6-4 7-6 (3) success over Pablo Cuevas while Lucas Pouille also advanced after his 6-1 6-2 win against Lu Yen-hsun.

In Tokyo, home favourite Kei Nishikori was made to work for a place in the last 16 at the Japan Open ATP event, against lucky loser Donald Young.

The No.1 seed’s preparations for the match were hampered by the late withdrawal of original first-round opponent Nicolas Almagro before it had started, so the American Young stepped in.

Young took the first set before Nishikori battled back to complete a 4-6 6-2 6-2 victory in one hour and 51 minutes.

Croatia’s Marin Cilic made it into the second round following a 6-0 4-6 6-3 win over Frenchman Benoit Paire and he will take on Fernando Verdasco next after he beat Japanese qualifier Go Soeda 6-7 (2) 6-3 6-3.

Joao Sousa of Portugal also won in three sets, overcoming Martin Klizan in a 4-6 6-3 6-3 success.
