First Australian Open win for Gajdosova

Jarmila Gajdosova has finally tasted singles success in her 10th attempt at the Australian Open.

Playing in the opening match on the revamped Margaret Court Arena on day one of the Open, Gajdosova was rarely troubled in beating Alexandra Dulgheru from Romania 6-3 6-4 in 88 minutes.

It is the 10th straight year Gajdosova has played in the main singles draw in Melbourne and the first time she has emerged as the victor.

But she faces an extremely difficult second-round encounter against Romanian third seed Simona Halep, who eased past Italy’s Karin Knapp 6-3 6-2 on Monday.

Gajdosova brought some encouraging form into the first grand slam event of the year, having advanced to the quarter-finals of last week’s Sydney International before bowing out in three tights sets to two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.

After a difficult couple of years on and off the court, the 27-year-old has got her world ranking back down to 62.

Thirteen Australians are in action at Melbourne Park on Monday including Nick Kyrgios, Bernard Tomic and Marinko Matosevic.
