Ebden out of Memphis Open

Australia’s Matthew Ebden has made a disappointing first round exit from the Memphis Open, beaten by lowly-ranked Swiss player Henri Laaksonen.

Ebden lost the first set 6-1 and then quit midway through the second set when 3-0 down, handing the world No.188 Laakson a final 16 spot where he will come up against fourth-seeded American Sam Querrey.

Australia are experiencing a poor run in the competition with Sam Groth also eliminated in the first-round by Ukrainian world No.82 Illya Marchenko.

The big-serving Australian went down 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-2) on Tuesday.

The in-form John Milman is the last remaining Australian in the draw and is currently involved in a three-set battle with American Austin Krajicek.

Milman took the first set 6-3 but lost the second 7-6 (7-3) against the world No.95.

Milman leads 3-1 in the third set.
