Duckworth progresses in Miami

James Duckworth has moved into the second round of the Miami Open while fellow Australians Thanasi Kokkinakis and Marinko Matosevic were sent packing from the tournament in Florida.

Qualifier and world No.97 Duckworth defeated Damir Dzumhur in 6-3 3-6 6-3 to set up a clash with Spaniard Fernando Verdasco on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT).

World No.108 Kokkinakis fell 6-4 3-6 6-2 to Argentine veteran Carlos Berlocq while Matosevic lost 6-3 6-3 to Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen.

“Thanks @MiamiOpenTennis for the opportunity. Dissapointing performance from me today but looking forward to next year! #Hometime #beenagrin,” Kokkinakis tweeted.

Berlocq needed two hours and 22 minutes under the glaring South Florida sun to get past 18-year-old Kokkinakis.

The Argentine capitalised on six of his 10 break chances to beat the wild card and Berlocq will next face seventh seed Stan Wawrinka.
