Djokovic, Murray out to join Nadal

As world No.2 Rafael Nadal savours another grand slam victory over Roger Federer, world No.1 Novak Djokovic and Britain’s Andy Murray will on Friday night seek to join him in Sunday’s Australian Open final.

Nadal downed Federer 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 in Thursday night’s first semi-final, with Djokovic and Murray to play in the other on Friday night.

The pair met in last year’s final, with Serbia’s Djokovic a straight sets winner, giving him the first of the three grand slam titles he won last year, to go with his 2008 Australian Open crown.

He beat Nadal in last year’s Wimbledon and US Open finals.

The Spaniard said it would take something special from Murray, who is yet to taste ultimate success at a major, to stop Djokovic qualifying for another grand slam final.

“Novak knows how he has to play,” Nadal said.

“He’s playing aggressive and he’s playing with no mistakes.

“If Andy wants to win that match, he has to play more aggressive than normal.

“That’s my advice, but my advice is not worth very much because I lost the last six matches against (Djokovic).”

While Djokovic has been in superb form so far in the tournament, he showed some signs of physical vulnerability in Thursday night’s straight sets quarter-final win over Spain’s David Ferrer.

Djokovic felt a surge of pain in his hamstring at one stage during that match and also experienced breathing difficulties.

But he was confident those issues would not hamper him against Murray.

“I’m not concerned about that at all,” he said after beating Ferrer.

“I’m really fit and I have no concerns of recovering for the next match.

“It’s just a matter of breathing better through the nose.”

Murray was hoping he would be better placed to challenge Djokovic than in last year’s final, buoyed by making the semi-finals of every major since.

“I definitely have more experience than I had at this point last year, because I played deep in the slams, the last five or six of them,” he said.

“(I’m) not necessarily more relaxed. I’m just more used to being in this position because of the experience.”
